How people actually move around Utila
Short version: on a scooter. It's how most of the island gets about, and there's nowhere it won't take you.
Do you even need a vehicle?
If you're staying in town and not planning to go far, you can walk. Plenty of people do the whole trip on foot and never miss having anything.
You'll want something with wheels when you want to:
- Reach the far side of the island without planning your day around it
- Come and go on your own schedule over several days
- Carry luggage or dive gear rather than hauling it
We'd rather tell you that honestly than sell you a scooter you don't need. But if any of the above sounds like your trip, it changes it completely.
What you'll actually be riding on
Every surface on the island, photographed with the same scooter. Nobody publishes this, and it's the question people actually have.
Your options
- Walking. Fine for town and the immediate surroundings.
- Tuk-tuks. The island's taxis. You hire the ride with a driver — they're not something you rent and drive yourself.
- Scooter. The default. Cheap, goes everywhere, easy to park. Rent a scooter.
- Golf cart. Room for the group and the luggage. Rent a golf cart.
- ATV or quad. Carries two. Not something the roads require. Rent a quad.
- Motorbike. If you want gears rather than an automatic. Rent a motorbike.
- Bicycle. Good for short distances and flat ground, and there are electric ones now. Rent a bike.
